Florida Driver Stuck On Drawbridge Lucky To Escape As Bridge Opens

What supplier of speed and danger doesn’t have the vision of jumping over a drawbridge when it’s opened? Heck, last year we even saw someone jump over a bridge in Florida. Ironically, this new video also comes from a suspension bridge in Florida, but this is no dream. It’s a nightmare.

Luckily, the Honda Accord driver escaped unscathed. We said it seems because the driver didn’t survive the horrific incident, according to reports from WPTV on West Palm Beach. The news outlet is conducting an investigation into the bridge incident and obtained the above video via a public records request, which features a near-disaster for this driver.

It actually happened in late October 2021 at the Ocean Avenue Bridge in Lantana, Florida. The video shows the Honda crossing the bridge, passing under the first gate as it closes. A bicycle was also spotted on the bridge at the same time, and passed through security cameras without incident.

Apparently, the car traffic gate had closed on the other side and the driver stopped just before the hinged section of the bridge. After about 30 seconds, the bridge opens with most of the cars in the span. The front tire is on the bridge, but the fascia is on the road. As a result, the tire fell into the gap just seconds after the bridge started to rise, making exit impossible. Good grief.

Fortunately, the bridge pushed the car forward through the gap, and when it was lowered, the driver managed to avoid the car. With the bridge back down (and the gate probably up) the driver just walks away. An alleged incident report from the bridge operator claims they didn’t see the car on the bridge until it closed, and with the rear tires under the span, they continued to lower the bridge. The incident report also claims the car left the scene and didn’t return, and apparently it was in that blind spot however hiding it from view through the large window. Suffice it to say, the bridge operator was fired.

We suspect there was some damage to the Honda nose piece, but at least the driver got away. That WTPV The investigation started due to a previous incident involving a different bridge with another driver who, unfortunately, wasn’t so lucky. Stay safe out there everyone.
