Fully electric cars are giving automakers a bit more of a headache when it comes to noise insulation. Without a combustion engine to remove the wind and tire noise, you start hearing more and more unwanted noise. That’s clearly unacceptable for a full-size premium sedan, which is why BMW went to great lengths to make the next-generation 7 Series cabin into a truly luxurious cocoon.
The next episode in the i7 teaser campaign takes us to Munich at BMW’s new Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) where the noise and emissions of rival Mercedes EQS are being measured. Test and development engineers evaluate motor and rolling noise, along with vibration and aeroacoustics. Even the mandatory pedestrian protection sounds are being fine-tuned, as are the built-in “engine” sounds, which were co-developed with Hollywood film music composer Hans Zimmer.

With the i7, BMW has optimized the electric drivetrain acoustically by developing a special mount for the electric motor. It has special noise encapsulation to guarantee quiet operation, enhanced by installing foam absorbers in the tires. Front body stiffness is also increased over the previous 7 Series generation, while flush door handles reduce wind noise.
For the same purpose, the BMW i7 2023 will have aero-optimized rearview mirror caps (why not camera?) and an almost closed underbody. In addition, the luxobarge has been shaped in such a way that it has a clear body surface. This change also pays dividends in terms of range by lowering air resistance.
BMW will unveil the 7 Series and i7 in the coming months, with the ICE model believed to be the 760i with over 600 horsepower from the V8 engine.
