A new advert for the GMC Hummer EV allows model spokesman LeBron James to highlight the vehicle’s CrabWalk mode. Funny ads allow thousands of crabs to show their approval for the system.

The ad starts with one yellow crab climbing a rock, and there are thousands of red crabs coming out of the sea in the background. Missy Elliott’s Get Ur Freak On start playing. The creatures arrive in a town, and these clever crustaceans are smart enough to wait at the intersection until the sign tells them it’s safe to cross the road.

The herd travels through the shopping district, and the creatures are surprised to see the server bring a two-tier tower of cooked shrimp to the table. Crabs also distract a runner, cross a pond, and annoy a walking dog.

Eventually, the crustaceans reached the Hummer EV. LeBron is in the electric pickup. He smirks at the camera and activates CrabWalk mode. The front and rear wheels rotate in the same direction. He left, and the crabs raised their claws apparently to celebrate the vehicle.

GMC positions the CrabWalk as using the Hummer EV’s four-wheel steering by increasing maneuverability in certain conditions such as when driving diagonally. In a first-of-its-kind trip report from our colleagues at Inside EVs, Tom Moloughney wrote:

“The CrabWalk feature feels very unnatural as the vehicle is actually moving sideways as well as forward. It’s not gradual – it actually “slides” sideways in the direction you’re steering and my first instinct was to stop the vehicle to process the directional motion.

“But the CrabWalk isn’t meant to be used for long road driving like I do. It’s really just meant to get you out of a tough situation – and I can certainly see how it would be able to do that.”

A large number of crabs taking over a city is not without precedent. The Australian region of Christmas Island is famous for its annual migration where millions of them emerge from the forest and go out to sea.

Shipments of the Hummer EV are now underway, albeit slowly. In Q4 2021, the company shipped one of them to the dealer. GMC has 59,000 reservations to fulfill for electric trucks.
