Tucked into the presentation that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles made for investors is a teaser illustrating the future derivative of ID. buzzing. The highlight of the bunch is the one that shows a steering wheel with red accents and a “GTX” badge on the bottom. The suffix has been used on spicy versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs.
On the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, dual electric motors provide the SUV with all-wheel drive and a combined output of 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet (460 Newton-meters). It’s too early to say whether ID. The Buzz GTX will offer identical output, but we wouldn’t be surprised. VW has promised to give all EVs the GTX treatment, and that will include the ID.3 GTX hot hatch.
In another slideshow, VW Commercial Vehicles shows a more spacious long-wheelbase model. As a refresher, it will be the only body style sold in the United States as the standard wheelbase and cargo models currently available in Europe will remain forbidden fruit. You can easily see the location of the rear wheel because it ends up in almost the same place as a regular ID. Buzz’s body ends. For the record, the LWB model is set to accept a larger 111-kWh battery pack.
This stretched ID. The Buzz also has all-wheel drive, meaning there’s one electric motor at the front and another at the back. It appears that VW’s commercial arm intends to sell the AWD-equipped ID. Buzz without the GTX badge. That makes sense given that the ID.4 GTX available on the Old Continent has a direct correspondence in the US known simply as ID.4 AWD.
The third slideshow depicts the seven-seat configuration, which will become the standard layout in the US. We may be wrong, but ID. The tantalizing buzz above seems to have a regular wheelbase. If our assumptions are correct, it means that VW Commercial Vehicles intends to sell electric minivans with seven seats and a shorter body in Europe and possibly other markets outside North America.
Expect this new ID. The Buzz variant will arrive in the next few years. The US-bound model is scheduled to go on sale in 2024.
