There’s nothing else in the automotive landscape like the GMC Hummer EV. You already know it’s a big SUV both in size and weight. You also know they’re incredibly powerful and fast, but did you know that their cool taillights cost $3,000…each?
Actually, the cost is $3,045.48 according to Drive, which confirmed the figure as a list price from General Motors. Again, that’s for one taillight, and that’s not including tax. If the Hummer EV is involved in some sort of rear-swept crash, that’s a $6,090.96 bill just for the lights.

We don’t know how difficult it is to remove and replace them, but with taxes and labor taken into account, a $7,000 repair bill for just two GMC Hummer EV taillights isn’t out of the question. Even in today’s crazy world of used car prices, that kind of money will get you a decent sedan or SUV. Like, all the vehicles you can drive, with the lights working evenly.
Why is this Hummer EV lens so expensive? We pinged GMC about it and are waiting for an answer, but the electric HumVee taillights aren’t just a piece of red plastic with a big H stamped into it. Long gone are the days of relays commanding flashing light bulbs – software and a microprocessor control the Hummer EV’s taillights, with Drive indicates that the processor is built into the lens. It looks cool to turn or stop, but the technology very expensive if you accidentally return to the workbench in the garage.
Whether there’s more to the price of the taillights isn’t clear, and we’re looking forward to hearing what GMC has to say about it. Even with a shortage of microchips and supply chain issues, 3 grand for one taillight seems like too much. Of course, we also deal in exclusive luxury SUVs that cost around $110,000, if you can find one that doesn’t have a dealer markup. Only the 782 has been delivered so far in 2022, and with news of the taillight price spreading like wildfire, we suspect owners will be very careful when venturing off-road.
