About a month ago, Ford introduced the Bronco Raptor in the United States as a fast off-roader with more than anything. Now, Blue Oval is ready to launch another Raptor, this time based on the recently launched global Ranger truck. Both will be followed by the F-150 Raptor R later this year, but that’s a story for another day.

Meanwhile, the Ranger Raptor will ditch its twin-turbo diesel engine in favor of a petrol plant. The number of cylinders is set to increase as four pots will make way for the EcoBoost V6. Displacement will grow from 2.0 to 3.0 liters which has yet to be confirmed bringing more horsepower than the oil burner has.

Expect a healthy bump over the previous model’s 210 hp as the petrol unit should have over 300 hp. This is an assumption we made based on the fact that you get 400 hp on the Explorer ST and more than that on the Bronco Raptor. As for torque, the turbodiesel has 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) while the petrol engine puts out 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) in the Explorer ST.

As usual with Raptor models, the beefier Ranger will be more than just an upgraded engine. Ford will strengthen the suspension, increase ride height, and install some thick all-terrain tires to increase the truck’s ability to go anywhere. It could have a 10-speed automatic transmission to mirror the Bronco Raptor which will share the large “FORD” lettering on the grille. It’s a design cue that’s also seen on the F-150 Raptor as a further visual difference compared to the lower trim levels.

Ford hasn’t released full details on the standard Ranger version yet, so the hotter Raptor is even more of a mystery. Unlike its predecessor, the new variant appears to be coming to the United States and will start at $52,500. It’s unknown if the rumored price tag includes a $1,295 destination fee, but provided the info is accurate, it would undercut the larger F-150 Raptor by around $16,000.

Even though the Ranger was previously launched in the US about seven years after the truck debuted in other markets, American buyers probably won’t have to wait too long this time around. State production reports at the Michigan plant will begin in May 2023 and end in 2031. It is unknown at this time whether the Raptor will hit the assembly line from day one or will arrive later in the lifecycle.

The Ford Ranger Raptor for global markets will be announced shortly when live is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 22, at 02:00 AM EST / 07:00 GMT.
