Jaguar F-Pace PHEV Safe But Not Too Fast In Deer Test

The plug-in hybrid version of the Jaguar F-Pace is one of the best long-haul family vehicles and it’s no surprise that it’s not the most agile SUV in terms of road behavior. Recent deer tests confirm that the F-Pace P400e isn’t designed for track use, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t safe and corner-stable. This is what the numbers tell us.

Our partners in km77.com get an electric luxury SUV and test it on their tracks. Trials explain the revised version of the F-Pace almost feels like a different car compared to the pre-facelift model. The old model is more agile and direct, while the new model is more comfortable and has superior ride quality. The difference is not very significant when the vehicle is on the track.

The first attempt around the cone in the deer test was made at 48 miles per hour (77 kilometers per hour) with the driver having no hope of how the SUV would react. This attempt was unsuccessful due to visible understeer but beyond that, the F-Pace PHEV remains predictable and safe in maneuver.

The top speed achieved was 44 mph (71 kph), which is only slightly slower than the previous version of the SUV (46 mph / 74 kph). At this speed, there is essentially no understeer, although other attempts at higher speeds proved unsuccessful as the SUV hit a cone. Drivers also say that while the suspension setup is comfortable, the F-Pace doesn’t exhibit any conspicuous body roll.

km77.com also tested the electrified SUV on the slalom track and noted that it ran well despite its large size and weighing close to 4,850 pounds (2,200 kilograms). The highly responsive and powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain compensates between cones, helping the F-Pace clock a decent 24.3 seconds for the entire maneuver.

As a reminder, the F-Pace P400e combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a peak output of 398 horsepower (297 kilowatts). The power is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
