The Superbike weekend in Portimao still sees the three big protagonists, but the race towards the world title sees Jonathan Rea move away from the seasonal goal. The Northern Irishman from Kawasaki is third in all three heats, not enough to keep the pounding pace of Alvaro Bautista and Toprak Razgatlioglu who now rise to pretenders to the throne of WorldSBKafter sharing one victory each in the main races and with the Turkish rider from Yamaha winning the Superpole Race.

The Ducati Panigale V4R made the difference on the long straight in Portimao, the R1 of Toprak in the braking in curve 1. At the end of the Iberian weekend Alvaro Bautista leads the standings with 448 points, with 56 points ahead of the direct rival Razgatlioglu. There are three races to go (Argentina, Indonesia and Australia) and the Borgo Panigale manufacturer begins to caress the world dream.

In the Portimao stage the Turkish of Yamaha seemed destined to make three of a kind after finishing first both in the first heat and in the sprint race. But the Talavera de la Reina rider ruined the reigning champion’s party by playing on tire strategy. Initially left behind Rea and Razgatlioglu first devoured the six-time world champion when he realized that the tires of the ZX10-RR were starting to drop and four laps from the finish he passed the Yamaha of Toprak, gaining precious tenths at each lap. Up to close the finish line with more than 2 ″ of advantage.

Michael Rinaldi finished fourth and took an important step towards fourth place in the Superbike standings. Ales Lowes completed the top 5, with Italian Andrea Locatelli sixth.

The winner, however, is Alvaro Bautista who flies to Argentina with a good advantage that he can administer, but it will be forbidden to make mistakes. “At the championship level, I don’t look at the points, I try to enjoy the journey. I’m having fun on the bike, enjoying every race, every practice session, every fight with Jonathan and Toprak, it’s fantastic. For me, what I am experiencing and enjoying is more important than the final result“.
