Tesla-Powered Honda S2000 Makes 500 Non-VTEC Horsepower

Over the past 10 years, the Honda S2000 has garnered a worldwide following. With over 100,000 units sold in a decade, you can easily find a Honda roadster fan even at your local auto meet. You can thank S2000’s pop culture engagement for that.

Much of the S2000’s fame comes from its exhilarating driving experience, with its open-top and VTEC power. But can you imagine a Honda S2000 made for the electric era? Ryan from Rywire Motorsport Electronics did, and he had to call on Tesla for help to complete the package. If you are a purist, you may want to turn away.

Ryan specializes in making neat Japanese cars that Hoonigan has been shown before, but he hasn’t really put a lot of effort into building an EV. That’s the goal with building this Honda S2000 EV.

To begin with, Ryan had to adjust the front to make it look different even at first glance. After consulting with his colleagues, he was able to create a bumper that was somehow reminiscent of the Volkswagen ID range.

Next up, the wheels. Ryan had to make a set of aero wheels to complete the EV’s look. For what it’s worth, we think they look fantastic, especially considering the non-symmetrical design that Ryan and his team somehow balance.

And then, of course, the powertrain. Motivated by a Tesla drive unit, this electric S2000 produces around 500 horsepower. The rear-mounted electric motor draws juice from the rather small battery. Specifically, two Chevy Volt battery packs with a total capacity of 38 kWh. The result is a range of up to 120 miles, which isn’t too shabby if just for everyday use.
