The redesigned Kia Niro isn’t really hiding these days. In any case, it was officially revealed to the world in November 2021, although it will take a few more months for Kia to finally offer the vehicle specifications. In addition, the disclosure is based in South Korea; Another debut for the US market is yet to come.
That’s why we shared this interesting video capturing Niro in public. Specifically, this sighting comes from California near Kia’s design center and is believed to be a US-spec model. Therefore, don’t expect any significant difference, visually or otherwise. We see the exact same bold styling on the outside, although a closer look you’ll notice striking yellow reflectors in the corners of the headlight housings. Such is life in America.
The video also captures the rear, where the high-mounted boomerang taillights are still reminiscent of the HabaNiro concept. There’s a second set of lights down on the rear bumper, and we noticed it wasn’t just a reverse light. The red part is the reflector, but the yellow LED strip comes alive for the turn signal. Looks like the signal just dropped low, leaving a boomerang for the taillights and brake lights only. Here’s the hope that that low turn signal is still visible to drivers in taller vehicles at a slightly safe distance.
It’s not yet clear what powertrain Kia will offer the Niro 2023 in the United States. Details about the standard edition hybrid were recently shared by the automaker, with the little people’s mover still using the 1.6-liter engine with electric assistance to produce a combined 139 horsepower (104 kilowatts). A full plug-in hybrid and EV version will come later, and while they should hit US shores, that’s yet to be confirmed.
We expect Kia to make an official US debut for the Niro in the first quarter of 2022, launching later for the 2023 model year.
