Volkswagen brings back the e-up! to its lineup for the 2022 model year. According to the automaker, it has stopped selling small EVs at the end of 2020 as delivery times increase to 16 months. Production resumed in 2021 to process the backlog and now, the automaker is bringing it back to Germany and the rest of Europe at last.

VW e-ups! stands as the automaker’s entry-level offering in the EV segment, placed under the VW ID.3. To date, more than 80,000 VW e-ups! have been sold all over the world. In Germany, it ranks second in 2021 for all-electric vehicles with the most recent registrations.

The only VW e-up! currently on offer is the Style Plus trim, which has a sticker price of 26,895 euros or about $3,400 at current exchange rates. This price includes VAT in Germany but does not account for the 9,570 euro ($10,830) deduction for environmental and innovation premiums, also in Germany.

Using a 32.2 kWh battery system, the maximum range that the VW e-up is! can cover on a single charge is 160 miles (258 kilometers) using the WLTP standard. “Charging” via 40 kW DC charging for 60 minutes allows the system to recharge up to 80 percent.

Meanwhile Volkswagen is filling e-up orders! In 2021, the Dacia Spring has taken its place as the cheapest new car in Europe without a combustion engine. The EV sourced from China has garnered more than 46,000 orders to date.

It looks like VW is ready to take on the Dacia Spring in the entry-level EV segment. The two will have a rivalry over the next two years as Spring’s successor has been officially confirmed for a 2024 launch.
