Just a few days ago, the upcoming Mazda CX-60 was caught testing out in public. The Japanese automaker has been pretty secretive about this car as it’s only the second time the crossover has been seen in the wild. But then again, it’s bound to happen and the company has put out an official teaser of the upcoming CX-60, the first PHEV to come with a Mazda badge.
Although we already have an idea of what it’s like based on the alleged undisguised sighting from last year, our friends from College trying to undress the disguised prototype to imagine what the CX-60 might look like.
The results are not surprising as the unofficial renderings here show Mazda’s current evolution Kodo design language. But again, the biggest difference from Mazda’s current crossover is the square grille, as well as the different daytime running lights.
Regardless, the CX-60 here does look like what you’d expect from a Mazda. However, don’t be fooled by the quad exhaust tips – the ones we saw in the prototype were fake ones.
Despite looking like a typical Mazda, the CX-60 is believed to be far different under the skin, using an entirely new rear-wheel drive platform built for in-line engines. More importantly, the assumed PHEV we saw earlier has been confirmed to produce over 300 horsepower.
The CX-60 is part of the “Large Product Group” announced in October 2021. It will have a wider US counterpart under the name CX-70, while the larger three-line CX-80 is heading to Europe. The fatter version of the latter will also have an American counterpart, called the CX-90.
But before all these cars hit the limelight, Mazda will launch the CX-60 on March 8, 2022. We’ll know more about the PHEV by then, or whether it will actually be an electrified model.
