Keeping up with car sales in 2022 requires careful management of expectations. As supply chain issues continue to affect dealer inventories, it’s difficult for those in the market to find new vehicles to buy—especially at fair prices. So it’s no surprise that many automakers are reporting a decline in sales compared to last year. However, some models managed to break through the chaos. Here is a list of our top 25 best-selling cars, SUVs and trucks for the first three quarters of the year. We will update this list every three months as more sales figures are released.

25. Honda Civic (96,286 units sold)
Like many of the other cars on this list, the Civic suffered from supply issues that contributed to a 56 percent drop in sales through the first three quarters of the year. That’s despite the fact that the Civic sedan and hatchback were redesigned for the 2022 model year.

24. Subaru Outback (105,404 units sold)
The Outback has sold more units this year than the Forester, but Crosstrek has surpassed it to become the best-selling Subaru. Sales fell 14 percent compared to last year.

23. Nissan Altima (106,122 units sold)
With sales up 41 percent over the first three quarters, the midsize Altima sedan beat the Sentra compact sedan by a wide margin. Sentra sales fell 43 percent.

22. Ford Escape (109,311 units sold)
Sales of the Ford Escape are down 2 percent compared to the first three quarters of last year, and it’s worth watching out for, as the more distinctive Bronco Sport catches up in terms of sales. “Baby Bronco” sold nearly 80,000 units so far this year.

21. Honda Accord (110.463 units sold)
The Accord is our perennial favorite, although sales are down 30 percent compared to last year. No more hunting with the Toyota Camry for the best-selling non-SUV in the country, but we’d still choose it over the popular Toyota.

20. Subaru Crosstrek (115,344 units sold)
With sales up 14 percent compared to last year, the Crosstrek is now the best-selling model in the Subaru lineup. It uses the same formula as the old Outback Sport model: it’s effectively a raised hatchback version of the Impreza with an extra body covering and a nice roof rack. There is a redesigned model for the 2024 model year.

19. Mazda CX-5 (115,949 units sold)
Mazda’s sales picked up at the start of the year, but things have slowed down lately. The CX-5, newly updated for the 2022 model year, is still in the lead, although sales are down 16 percent compared to last year.

18. Hyundai Tucson (125,625 units sold)
It’s no surprise that the Tucson is Hyundai’s representative on this bestseller list. Not only is it redesigned for 2022, it’s also competing in the popular compact crossover segment, and sales are up about 8 percent from this time last year.

17. Nissan Rogue (130,135 units sold)
Sales of the Nissan Rogue are down 45 percent compared to this time last year, which means it lags behind many of the other compact-crossover competitors on this list. And this despite the fact that Nissan combined sales figures for the standard Rogue and the smaller Rogue Sport.

16. Tesla Model 3 (138,100 units sold, estimated)
The Model 3 and Model Y made up the bulk of Tesla’s shipments throughout the first three quarters of this year. But because Tesla doesn’t break down its US sales figures from its global figures, we use Automotive News sales forecast.

15. Jeep Wrangler (147,156 units sold)
The Wrangler for Jeep is like the 501 for Levi’s, but it’s not the brand’s best-selling model. The Grand Cherokee has far surpassed this iconoclastic 4×4 of late, and we wonder how many 86,387 Ford Broncos sold in the first three quarters of this year accounted for the Wrangler’s 11 percent drop compared to last year.

14. Ford Explorer (156,243 units sold)
The Explorer has not kept up with mid-size SUV competitors of late, with sales down 3 percent compared to last year. Meanwhile, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota Highlander are both now found higher up on this list.

13. Tesla Model Y (162,000 units sold, estimated)
Teslas aren’t cheap or easy to get these days, but the Model Y is still finding its way into many American roads. Automotive News estimates that the EV automaker will ship 162,000 in the first three quarters of 2022.

12. Chevy Equinox (163,324 units sold)
The Equinox now sits in third place in the mainstream compact-crossover sales race through the first three quarters of 2022. Sales are up 8 percent compared to last year.

11. Toyota Highlander (164,451 units sold)
The Toyota Highlander has moved up the sales rankings this year, even making it into the top 10 bestsellers at one point, but the third quarter was weak. Sales are now down 21 percent compared to last year.

10. GMC Sierra (169,107 units sold)
The top-class twin of the Chevy Silverado is included in the top 10 best-selling vehicles during the first three quarters of this year. These include the heavy-duty model and the light-duty Sierra 1500.

9. Toyota Corolla (171,556 units sold)
The Toyota Corolla is synonymous with fuel efficiency, reliability and affordability, but its popularity is on the decline. Sales fell 21 percent compared to last year. The hot hatchback GR Corolla 300-hp that just debuted is certainly attractive, but it will never be able to significantly increase the volume of the Corolla due to its niche status.

8. Jeep Grand Cherokee (172,545 units sold)
Similar to the Highlander, we’re not used to seeing a mid-size Jeep SUV this high on bestseller lists. Both the three-row L model and the new two-row model are now on sale; After a strong first half, the number of GC’s is now down 9 percent compared to last year.

7. Toyota Tacoma (175,872 units sold)
Toyota still dominates the mid-size pickup in terms of sales, beating the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado. But Tacoma did drop 12 percent compared to this time last year.

6. Honda CR-V (178,687 units sold)
The new Honda CR-V 2023 will be on sale soon, but the model that came out is still holding out, retaining its place in the top 10 bestsellers. Sales are down 38 percent compared to this time last year, but maybe the new model can help turn that around.

5. Toyota Camry (214,403 units sold)
Although SUVs have largely taken over this list, the Toyota Camry remains the best-selling vehicle that is neither an SUV nor a pickup truck. The Camry is down 17 percent but still outperforms many SUVs and surpasses the next best passenger car, the Corolla, by a significant margin.

4. Toyota RAV4 (303,341 units sold)
The RAV4 has cemented its position as the best-selling non-pickup car in recent years, and looks set to continue for 2022. Sales are down 3 percent but still have a wide margin over the next best-selling model on this list.

3. Ram Pickup (363,089 units sold)
The Ram pickup line, including light and heavy versions, is down 16 percent compared to last year. That and the Silverado have been battling for a silver medal in the sales race, although Chevy reclaimed the lead recently.

2. Chevy Silverado (374,479 units sold)
The light-duty Silverado 1500 got an update for 2022, and needs to regain some sales momentum to pass the Ram for second place. These figures also include sales of heavy-duty models.

1. Ford F-Series (467,307 units sold)
Even a 13 percent drop can’t knock the F-series line up from its place atop the sales rankings. Ford has also started selling an electric version of the F-150 called the Lightning and says it has sold 8760 electric pickups so far.
